Flyer
Pteranodon
Pteranodon longiceps
“Long-headed toothless wing”
Only flyer in the roster — piscivore, scavenger, fragile-but-fast grower.

In The Isle
In The Isle, Pteranodon is a fast-growing creature that offers incredible mobility — perfect for players who want to explore the map with ease, though new players may struggle with the fidelity of the flight mechanics. Learning to fly takes time, but once mastered Pteranodon is arguably the easiest and most efficient creature to grow in the game; flying high over terrain and resting on mountains, it stays safely aloft and away from danger. Though primarily a piscivore and scavenger, live dinosaurs aren't off the menu — Pteranodon can kill small creatures by striking from above with a volley of pecks. It's risky, though: crash on a missed dive and the grounded Pteranodon is vulnerable to anything, even juveniles it was trying to hunt. You cannot pick up and drop dinosaurs as Pteranodon. It was added to The Isle in EVRIMA Patch 0.7.85.04 alongside Deinosuchus.
In Real Life
Pteranodon was a large oceanic pterosaur with an enormous 20-foot wingspan, gliding over the ancient seas and skies of North America. Despite its huge wingspan, Pteranodon weighed only ~40 kg. It was covered in fluffy pycnofibers (a hair-like coat) that may have helped it retain body heat during underwater dives — which it frequently made to catch fish, invertebrates, and other small creatures. In contrast, The Isle's Pteranodon lacks pycnofibers (giving it a naked look) and occupies freshwater rather than the oceans.
Abilities
- • Flight — the only dino with full flight in the game
- • Peck attack from the air — sharp downward strike on prey below
- • Fish-catch via beak dip over ripples (RMB) or aerial peck (LMB)
- • Tree / cliff latching via air-brake (Z) + hold RMB — regenerates stamina slowly
- • Massive scouting range — can travel anywhere on the map quickly
Strengths & Weaknesses
- + Flight — unique on the roster
- + Incredibly fast growth time (~40 min)
- + Fast health regeneration
- + Can travel anywhere thanks to low stamina consumption and high speed
- + Eats fish — always plentiful food source
- − Very weak — currently the weakest carnivore in the game
- − Flight takes time to master
- − Extremely vulnerable on the ground — even small critters can kill it
- − Can be baited by fake ripples produced by submerged Deinosuchus
Behavior
Ptero players scout — spot AI prey, mark threats for their pack, and feed on fish and carrion. Combat-focused Ptero play is rare and dangerous; flight discipline (avoid solid objects, manage stamina, avoid sprint-glide into jungle) matters more than aggression.
Growth
Total ~40 min — one of the fastest growth times in the game.
Controls
Launching: hold SPACE for a stand-still launch (high stamina cost), or run + hold SPACE for a slightly cheaper running takeoff. A falling launch (jump off a cliff, press SPACE while falling) is the most stamina-efficient. Reinforced Tendons mutation does NOT reduce launch cost — it's always at least ~8%. Ascending: hold SPACE while airborne to flap and gain altitude (costs stamina). Gliding: release SPACE — automatic descent at no stamina cost. Navigation: WASD steers (A/D yaw, W/S pitch). Camera follows freely (no ALT needed in flight). Descend with CTRL, or air-brake with Z for graceful landing — but if you over-brake you stall and fall. Tap-sprint once and let momentum carry; you don't need to hold sprint. Attack mid-flight: LMB pecks downward; chain pecks onto creatures below from just out of reach, but don't slam into your target. Tree/cliff latch: air-brake (Z) into the object + hold RMB. Fishing: glide low over ripples and hold RMB to dip your beak; watch for the brief release prompt. Faster alternative: peck (LMB) the fish directly while flying overhead. Carrying a fish attracts Pterodactylus AI — press G to drop and they'll chase the fish instead of you.
