In The Isle

Troodon are highly social pack animals that band together to take down prey heavily outclassing them in size. The kit centers on the **Venom Pounce** — an attack that deals damage and applies a stack of Venom to the target. Venom multiplies the damage every Troodon deals to that target, and the affected creature glows in scent vision (blue at 1 stack, purple at higher stacks). After applying a stack, the Troodon chitters — that sound is the cooldown signal and a stack-level indicator. Re-pouncing before the chitter ends actually drops the stack by one step, so timing matters. Stacks: 1× pounce = 1.3× damage (blue), 2× = 1.6× damage (purple), 3× = 2× damage (purple). Design-wise: "At its heart they're limbed, venomous snakes with mischievous and eerie mannerisms. Hyenas were a good reference for their curious nature and death-by-1000-cuts style of hunting. Crows were the 2nd source of inspiration for their social nature, rambunctious curiosity, and knack for antagonizing other predators (particularly with their habit of tail-grabbing)." Not particularly dangerous solo — Troodon becomes problematic for a wide range of creatures only when operating in a coordinated group.

In Real Life

Troodon was a dubious genus of small feathered birdlike dinosaurs from the Cretaceous Period (~86.3–66 million years ago) of North America, hunting small mammals, insects, and baby or small dinosaurs. Around 2017, due to questions over its validity, the scientific consensus shifted: Troodon's holotype is no longer considered a valid genus, and the specimens originally assigned to it have been redistributed to Latenivenatrix and Stenonychosaurus.

Abilities

  • Venom Pounce — applies a Venom stack on hit
  • Venom multiplies pack damage: 1.3× → 1.6× → 2× at 1/2/3 stacks
  • Envenomated targets glow in scent vision (blue → purple)
  • Chitter call signals stack cooldown / level
  • Tiny hit-box, high agility, great night vision

Strengths & Weaknesses

Pros
  • + Fast
  • + Agile and maneuverable
  • + Short growth time (~40 min)
  • + Can kill prey much larger than itself via venom-stack multiplier
  • + Small — hard to detect and hit
  • + Great night vision
Cons
  • Extremely fragile
  • Very low base damage
  • 1.6 km/h slower than Omniraptor
  • Venom mechanic requires a coordinated pack to be significant

Behavior

Hyena-and-crow style — Troodon hunts as a chittering pack, taking turns biting at prey while other members distract. Coordinated targeting is everything: building stacks fast and timing re-pounces around the chitter cooldown is the skill ceiling. Solo Troodon play is mostly survival, not hunting.

Growth

Total ~40 min — one of the fastest growth times in the game.
